Joseph C. Phillips studied at the University of the Pacific where he initially chose communications as a major. However, he later got himself to New York University’s acting conservatory. He finally graduated in 1983, with a BFA in Acting.
Joseph is affiliated with Alpha Phi Alpha, which happens to be the first intercollegiate Greek-letter sorority that was set up for the African Americans. He is also a representative of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America and has spoken comprehensively about the disease and how it affects the family of the sufferer.
Joseph is also affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Actors Equity Association, as well as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He was also the National Co-Chairperson of the African American Steering committee for Bush/Cheney in 2004. He was also nominated as a member of the Republican National Committee’s African American Advisory Board.
In addition, Joseph was chosen by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be a part of the state board of directors of the California African American Museum, besides being named as a Claremont Institute Lincoln Fellow in 2005.
Besides being a television and radio commentator, Joseph is also a conservative Republican, and promotes conservative views through his weekly write-ups in a syndicated column. He has been often criticized for opposing the same-sex marriage. Joseph has been married to his wife Nicole since 1994. The couple has three children till date.
Even though Joseph has appeared in over two dozen TV shows till date, he is perhaps most well known for his portrayal of Denise Huxtable’s husband and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Martin Kendall, on the super hit comedy series, The Cosby Show. His most prominent appearances on other shows have been on A Man Called Hawk, A Different World, Living Single, Any Day Now, City of Angels, The King of Queens, V.I.P., The District, General Hospital, Las Vegas, Vanished, Without a Trace, The Young and the Restless, Castle, and various others.
Besides working in numerous TV shows, Joseph has also worked in a few movies. These include, Strictly Business, A Fare to Remember, Let’s Talk About Sex, Getting Played, and Boogie Town. His upcoming movie project Church, is currently under the process of post-production and is supposed to be released sometime next year.
During his career in the entertainment industry, Joseph has been nominated three Image Awards from 1997 to 1999. All the three nominations were under the category of Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series, for his outstanding performance in General Hospital.
Role In The Cosby Show
In The Cosby Show, Joseph plays the role of Martin Kendall. He married Denise Huxtable after the two met in Africa. He works in the Navy and has one daughter named Olivia, from a previous relationship. Upon returning to the Huxtable household, after their marriage, Martin is surprised to learn that Denise has not informed her family, either about him or their marriage. Throughout the remaining seasons of the show, Denise and Martin keep moving in and out of the Huxtable family home, while they strive to get an apartment of their own.
