Malcolm-Jamal Warner was born as the son of Pamela Warner. He was brought up single-handedly by his divorced mother. His name is combination of the names of the Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal and Malcolm X. He showed an inclination towards show business when he was only nine years old. This resulted in him being enrolled in various acting schools.
Malcolm attended the Agelus Mesa Elementary School and then went on to complete his high school studies in June 1988. He also attended the Professional Children’s School in New York and also attended an acting class in Inglewood, California, to study acting under Gary Veney.
Malcolm’s is maternal grandparents are James and Thelma Mcgee while his paternal grandmother is Alpha Kate Warner. He loves to play basketball and the Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, is his favorite rock band. He participated in the 1985 Pittsburgh parade in the capacity of a grand Marshall. In VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Kid Stars, Malcolm was placed at 32nd rank.
Malcolm dated late actress Michelle Thomas before she died from cancer. At the time of her death in 1998, Malcolm was there at her bedside. Later, Malcolm got into a relationship with actress Karen Malina White, whom he dated for more than seven and a half years. Although it was rumored that the two had been married, Malcolm turned down the rumors stating them to be false.
Malcolm is a multitalented person who started acting very early in life and made his first appearance on television in the early 1980’s. He has portrayed various characters in more than two dozen TV shows. His most prominent appearances have been on shows like, ABC Afterschool Specials, A Different World, Mother’s Day, The Cosby Show, The Magic School Bus, Malcolm & Eddie, Jeremiah, Listen Up, The Cleaner and Hawthorne, etc.
Although, Malcolm has worked in less than ten movies, his strong performances have left a lasting impression on his fans. His appearances on the big screen have been for the movies Drop Zone, A Fare to Remember, Restaurant, 15 Minutes, Reflections: A Story of Redemption, The List, Fool’s Gold and Contradictions of the Heart.
Michael has also donned the cap of director for projects like Malcolm & Eddie, One on One with Magic Johnson, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Cosby Show, This Old Man and New Edition Past and Present etc. In addition, he has also produced Malcolm & Eddie, The Last Laugh: Memories of the Cosby Show and This Old Man. Moreover, Malcolm has also written an episode of Malcolm & Eddie besides performing in the soundtrack of The Cosby Show.
Malcolm’s another talent is of being a musician. He is the head of Miles Long, a jazz front band that records under the name of the Wonder Factory, which is Malcolm’s own label. Malcolm also plays upright bass and in his free time he participates in live poetry readings. In 1988, he released his autobiography titled Theo and Me.
During his career in the entertainment industry, Michael has been nominated for six different awards. In addition, Malcolm has also won three Young Artist Awards. In 1985, he won this award for The Cosby Show under the category of Best Young Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy Series.
In 1989, he again won the award for the same show along with his co-stars under the category of Best Young Actor/Actress Ensemble in a Television Comedy, Drama Series or Special. In 1990 he once again won the same award for the same show under the category of Best Young Actor Supporting Role in a Television Series.
Malcolm has also earned the nominations for one each of BET Comedy Awards, Emmy Awards, TV Land Awards and Young Artist Awards. He has received two nominations for the prestigious Image Awards.

Role In The Cosby Show
In The Cosby Show, Malcolm plays the role of Theo Huxtable, the only son of the Huxtable family. He is fanatic about impressing girls and having an inclination for athletics, he is also passionate about owning a sports car or motorcycle. Even though in the initial seasons of the series he was portrayed to be troublesome teenager, his behavior improved considerably as the series progressed. He also evolved from being an under achiever at school to becoming a successful student in high school and college. Throughout the series, he maintained a relationship with a girl named Justine, which despite being long-running was frequently in an on-now-off-now mode. Theo’s character was woven around Bill Cosby’s real life son, Ennis.
